However you arrive here, let curiosity guide you.

This archive is designed to be experienced slowly. Rather than listening to an album once and moving on, spend time with it. Read about the artist before pressing play. Notice the historical moment in which the music was created. Pay attention to the instruments, the spaces between notes, and the emotions that emerge while you listen. Then continue the journey through the recommended books, artists, and recordings connected to each page. Jazz rewards patience, and often shows us something new with every return.

Above all, resist the urge to rush. You do not need to understand everything you hear. Five Ways to Listen
Rather than organizing this collection chronologically or by popularity, The Jazz Field Guide is organized around five ideas that have shaped Black musical history. Each artist represents a different way of understanding jazz; not only as a musical tradition, but as a reflection of Black life. Together, these artists demonstrate that jazz has never been one thing. It has continually evolved alongside the communities that created it, carrying new ways of listening with each generation.

These five musicians are not presented as the "greatest" jazz artists, nor are they meant to represent every corner of the genre. Instead, they serve as five entry points into a much larger conversation. Each room in this archive explores a different philosophy, encouraging listeners to experience jazz through themes that extend far beyond music.
